A blend of physical and digital creativity that critiques what is tangible and what is on the screen, when it comes to an occupied territorial memory.
I am fascinated with delving into in-depth explorations of topics I am concerned with. This notion helps me comprehend the issue personally and it is part of my practice, I would only feel free when I develop a relationship by familiarizing myself with the subject matter. Starting with research and moving onto experimentation and exploration in many ways we know of, by Studying one subject matter as a whole, delving into all aspects of research within the same realm.
I tend to explore thematic connections varying from sociological, political, and personal, linking it to my research practice which consists of exploring archives, listening to sounds, going outside for a walk, and reading a book, the process tends to be poetic and philosophical, with influences from Western and Palestinian literature, which are sometimes reflected in my practice. I tend to explore personal thematic connections varying from, socio-politics, gender, and geography which all tie in together when making work about the Palestinian displacement and occupation.
Whether choosing the material, style, or medium, they all must somehow serve a purpose to my concept. Despite working with traditional materials in my art practice, I developed my voice and expression through contemporary explorations of analog sound, photography, mixed-media animation, printmaking, sculpture, scanography, and filmmaking. As an example, I combine natural and man-made processes and mediums that are emphasized through my work as a both traditional and contemporary artist. At the end of the day, my work could be a form of resistance, expression, or simply story-telling.
How to revive an uprooted fig tree- Senior Thesis Installation
Throughout my creative process, I developed ways of narrating instances or in-depth personal stories. I intentionally create projects to fulfill my needs and let out the artistic explosion inside me. I would like the viewer to go through a whole experience by diving into the body of the work I present. When I start creating work with art or sound - like prints, laser cut leaves, cyanotype, scanography, or synthesizers, I prefer for all of them to be included somehow in the final outcome.
When I work with materials I am very diligent and emotional with the process and its content. If I frequently smell the fig leaf and I feel it connects to the delivery of my message in conveying memories and sensory experiences; I definitely would like the viewer to be immersed in that as well. The video process shifts the physical territory into a digital one; it also means I meticulously transform tangible materials into a digital form or shape.
I wanted to explore the nature of a leaf not only as an individual phenomenon but as where it grows and how it functions in its surroundings with other things like birds, insects, human beings, or simply objects. Leaves are quite fragile and delicate which connects to my concept, “breaking through the very fine layers of things” Nature is a big part of my life and interpersonal connection with nature, animals, and our environment overall. Using significant symbols such as spirals, triskelion, and Fibonacci’s theory of sequence in which most things in life spiral and have a specific pattern.
Using a laser cutter which is a machine that does the job for you and physically engraves the layers of the leaf, it’s a contrast of what is man and nature-made subjects in life, so the process of the machine piercing through an extremely natural object such as a leaf tackles the topic of climate change and environmental issues.
The interference of spirals into the leaf goes back to nature and environmentalism. Everything spirals and connects in life, our actions have consequences and actions have reactions based on what was done to them.
